ABOUT ISJNI'19

About the ISJNI 2019

The nervous system (NS) is no doubt one of the most complex and fascinating systems of the human body. Lesions of the NS have severe outcomes on the body function. From this perspective, the understanding of the organization and function of healthy and pathologic brain is of high challenge in research and modern medicine.

Neurosciences is among the fastest developing biomedical sciences, which plays a crucial role in the understanding and the treatment of neurologic and psychiatric diseases that break the lives of many people and impose a heavy clinical and socio-economic burden in society.

According to the estimates published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank in the mid-1990s, nerve traumas, neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric and mental disorders as well as cognitive dysfunctions would represent no-less than 25% of economic burden of diseases. In Morocco, official precise data on the diseases affecting the nervous system are relatively rare and most of neuropathologies remain under diagnosis. However, published hospital statistics become more and more alarming. Thus, stroke is the third leading cause to death. Epilepsy could affect approximately 375,000 people according to the declarations of the Moroccan league against epilepsy. International agencies estimated the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease at 8.76%. According to the Ministry of Health, 60,000 cases of Parkinson disease in Morocco are announced annually.

The issues around the theme of this symposium devoted to neuroscience are immense, since on the one hand it revolves around a better understanding of the brain’s behavior and functioning in relation to mental processes. On the other hand, it optimizes the learning methods, opens up new opportunities in the biomedical field, and responds to the economic and social costs that are increasing with the increase of life expectancy.

Aims of ISJNI 2019

The most relevant goals of the ISJNI 2019 are:

  • Understanding the function / dysfunction of the nervous system (development, maturation, plasticity, aging) in interaction with the environment;

  • Identification of mechanisms leading to neurological and psychiatric diseases so as to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches;

  • Highlight the need to advance targeted nutritional and therapeutic strategies in order to prevent neurocognitive pathologies in animal models and humans;

The symposium celebrates the scope of research in neuroscience within Morocco and abroad and encompass oral presentations and posters that describe the latest advances in neuroscience research.

ISJNI 2019 benefits:

  • Strengthening bridges between fundamental and clinical research;

  • Developing research platforms that promote collaborative and synergistic work;

  • Valuing the results of scientific research so that other application sectors will benefit from these advances, particularly in the areas dedicated to high medical technologies;

  • Exploring new avenues of research, particularly through the understanding of the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative and neurocognitive processes and the identification of risky behaviors and lifestyles as well;

  • Adopt strategies comprising objectives and means of action for scientific programming, which must address the social and ethical questions posed by neuroscience;

  • Provide multidisciplinary and international specialized training through the implementation of quality programs that meet socio-economic requirements;

Awareness of the needs generated by the job market to better know the minimum number of graduates who will be trained to ensure scientific and economic development in the field of neuroscience.
